Freshman Jake Amman delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to an 8-7 win over James Madison University on Friday evening at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
With this result, Charleston’s record moves to 4-6 for the season. The victory marks their second walk-off win of the year.
Charleston built an early 3-1 lead in the third inning after a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Landon Penfield and a two-run fielding error by James Madison. The Cougars extended their advantage in the fourth with RBI hits from Amman and graduate student Dylan Johnson. However, James Madison responded by scoring in four consecutive innings to take a 7-5 lead.
Graduate Will Tippett narrowed the gap with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. In the ninth inning, Johnson tied the game at seven with an RBI single that brought home Amman. After graduate Kurt Rogers kept James Madison scoreless in the top of the tenth, Amman hit a single through the left side, allowing senior Payton Frehner to score and secure Charleston’s win.
Freshman pitcher Carter Harrington made his first career weekend start, pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Hench struck out two batters in relief during the ninth inning.
Charleston now holds a 25-10 record against James Madison all-time and has won seven of their last eight meetings. This was also their first neutral site matchup between these programs. Amman’s performance marked his first four-hit game after collecting three hits earlier in the week against East Carolina University. Rogers earned his second win of the season, while Johnson notched his third multi-hit game and second multi-RBI contest this year. Charleston has now won four of its last five extra-inning games.
Charleston will conclude play in Greenville with a game against Illinois on Saturday at 10 a.m.
