Four playgrounds in Charleston will soon undergo major renovations as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to provide safe and modern recreational spaces. The upgrades will focus on Mary Utsey Park, Stephen Washington Park, and Brittlebank Park, where new equipment will replace structures dating back to the 1990s. All three are currently in the design phase.
The work continues a longstanding investment by Charleston in its parks infrastructure. Since 2012, when the Playground Replacement Program began, the city has replaced 29 older playground systems across 23 parks and added 18 new playgrounds through developing 13 additional parks.
Jason Kronsberg, Facilities and Capital Projects Section Chief for Charleston, stated: “Our goal is to ensure every child in Charleston has access to a safe and vibrant place to play. We’re proud of the progress made and remain committed to keeping our playgrounds in excellent condition for generations to come.”
The Playground Replacement Program was established after a comprehensive review found that many existing playgrounds had outlived their intended lifespan and were presenting safety concerns as well as increased maintenance needs. Funding for these improvements comes from various sources including city budgets, state and federal grants, and community fundraising initiatives.
A full list of parks improved or developed through this program is available on the City’s website.
