The College of Charleston baseball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 10-5, on Apr. 12 at Patriots Point, securing a series sweep. The Cougars tallied 10 runs on 14 hits and stole seven bases in the game.
This victory improves Charleston’s record to 8-7 in the Coastal Athletic Association and 16-19 overall. North Carolina A&T drops to a season record of 9-25 and is now 3-12 in league play.
Six different Charleston players recorded two hits each during the game. Freshman Jake Amman became the third Cougar this weekend to steal three bases in a single contest. Another freshman, Austin Wiegandt, earned his second win by striking out five batters over 3.2 innings while allowing only one run.
North Carolina A&T started strong with four runs in the first inning before sophomore Alex LaCoste narrowed the gap with a two-run single for Charleston in the third inning. The Cougars took control with a seven-run fourth inning, sending eleven batters to the plate and collecting six singles along with two walks and two stolen bases during that frame.
Charleston extended its lead further when Amman and graduate Dylan Johnson executed a double steal in the fifth inning, followed by Amman scoring on an error by North Carolina A&T’s catcher. Graduate Kurt Rogers pitched two scoreless innings before first-year player Kaden Myers closed out the ninth for Charleston without allowing any baserunners.
The Cougars have now won five consecutive games and completed their second straight season sweep of North Carolina A&T. They have also won seven of their last eight meetings against them. According to team statistics, Charleston has improved to an all-time record of 16-5 against N.C. A&T and is now 11-4 at home versus this opponent.
Charleston will next host USC Upstate for a matchup scheduled at Patriots Point on April 14.
