College of Charleston’s baseball team secured a 6-3 victory over Presbyterian on Tuesday at Patriots Point. The Cougars’ pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts during the game, and graduate Will Tippett contributed a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
With this win, Charleston improved its season record to 5-7, while Presbyterian dropped to 2-11. This result also extended Charleston’s all-time series lead against Presbyterian to 3-0.
In the first inning, Charleston worked three walks off Presbyterian pitcher Tucker Meredith. Sophomore Landon Penfield drove in freshman Jake Amman with a single, and senior Payton Frehner added another run with a bases-loaded walk for an early 2-0 advantage. Tippett increased the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice bunt that brought home freshman Nick Diaz.
Charleston maintained a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth before Tippett hit his first home run as a Cougar, driving in two runs. Redshirt junior Carson Bryant started on the mound and struck out three batters over two scoreless innings. Sophomore Parker Sweeney followed with three more strikeouts across two innings without allowing a run. Redshirt senior Alex Lyon pitched the final three innings, striking out three and earning his eighth career save.
Other notable performances included Amman recording hits in his first at-bat for five consecutive games, reaching base multiple times in four straight contests, and Johnson hitting his first career triple. The Cougars drew eight walks during the game, their highest total of the season. Tippett achieved his 13th career multi-RBI game.
Charleston will begin Colonial Athletic Association play against Hofstra from March 6-8. Due to weather and field conditions, the series will be played at Patriots Point instead of its original location, with Charleston serving as the away team. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.
