The College of Charleston baseball team lost to Campbell, 6-4, on April 26 at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
The game saw the Cougars attempt a late comeback but ultimately fall short. The loss brings Charleston’s overall record to 20-23 and their conference record in the Colonial Athletic Association to 10-11. Campbell improved its record to 29-14 overall and holds a strong position in league play with a 20-4 mark.
Campbell took an early lead with one run in the first inning and three more in the third. Redshirt senior Ethan Plyler put Charleston on the board with an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring freshman Jake Amman. In the fifth inning, freshman Nick Diaz hit his first career home run for Charleston, narrowing the deficit. However, Campbell added runs in both the sixth and ninth innings.
Charleston tried to rally in their final at-bat. Back-to-back walks set up Amman for an RBI double, followed by graduate Dylan Johnson driving in another run with a groundout. Despite these efforts, they could not complete the comeback.
Redshirt senior Alex Lyon pitched a career-high five and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen for Charleston, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five batters—a personal best for him. Lyon made his ninety-fourth career relief appearance during this game, leaving him one shy of tying the program’s all-time relief appearance record.
Looking ahead, Charleston will begin May on a road trip to Wilmington from May 1 through May 3.
