The College of Charleston baseball team will travel to Columbia to play against South Carolina on April 7, with the game scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Founders Park and broadcast live on SEC Network Plus.
This matchup follows Charleston’s recent win over High Point, where the team secured a walk-off victory with a score of 6-5. Graduate player Dylan Johnson contributed significantly by hitting his third home run of the season, a 409-foot shot in the seventh inning. Johnson has achieved three games with three hits each in his last seven appearances, batting .458 during that period.
Sophomore Alex LaCoste delivered the game-winning single in the ninth inning, allowing Johnson to score from first base. LaCoste’s performance throughout the week earned him Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week honors, highlighted by a five-hit, two-home run effort against Winthrop on March 31.
Redshirt senior Alex Lyon made his 90th career appearance as a pitcher for Charleston in Saturday’s game, becoming only the third Cougar pitcher to reach this milestone. Sophomore Parker Sweeney also set a personal record by striking out six batters over three innings of relief work; he currently holds an earned run average of 0.82 over his last seven outings.
Historically, Charleston is 7-36 against South Carolina in their series matchups. The Gamecocks won their most recent meeting last year with a score of 4-3 at Segra Park in Columbia. However, Charleston claimed victory during their last visit to Founders Park with a shutout win (9-0) on May 9, 2018.
Charleston will return home after this contest to host North Carolina A&T for a three-game conference series from April 10 through April 12.
