The City of Charleston has started a series of meetings to discuss the proposed 2026 Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and to identify priority projects for the city.
At the first Traffic and Transportation Committee meeting, Mayor William Cogswell and City Councilmembers discussed roadway projects on Johns Island and James Island. The focus was on safety improvements, reducing congestion, and addressing infrastructure needs.
This meeting is the beginning of a process to determine transportation priorities throughout Charleston. The committee will continue to review project needs in upcoming meetings, each with a specific focus. The schedule includes sessions on West Ashley and Downtown roadway projects, greenbelt preservation, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, public transit initiatives, and a final meeting for public input and review of all projects as a comprehensive package.
The Traffic and Transportation Committee meetings are set for October 28 and November 12 and 18. Charleston City Council meetings are scheduled for October 14 and 28, November 12, and November 18. All meetings are open to the public, held at City Hall Council Chamber at 80 Broad Street, and streamed on the City’s YouTube Channel.
Mayor William Cogswell stated, “The City of Charleston held the first in a series of meetings last night to discuss the proposed 2026 Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and begin identifying the city’s priority projects for inclusion.”
