The City of Charleston has started a series of meetings to discuss the proposed 2026 Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and to determine which transportation projects should be prioritized for inclusion.
At the first meeting, held by the Traffic and Transportation Committee on Tuesday, Mayor William Cogswell and members of City Council focused on roadway projects for Johns Island and James Island. The discussion included topics such as safety improvements, congestion relief, and critical infrastructure needs.
This meeting is part of a larger process aimed at defining transportation priorities throughout Charleston. In the coming weeks, the committee will continue its review through both regular and special meetings. Each session will focus on different geographic areas or specific themes related to transportation.
The schedule for upcoming Traffic and Transportation Committee meetings includes:
– October 28 at 3:00 p.m., focusing on West Ashley and Downtown roadway projects.
– November 12 at 3:30 p.m., a special meeting dedicated to greenbelt preservation, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and public transit initiatives.
– November 18 at 3:00 p.m., which will center on public input and a comprehensive review of all proposed projects.
Charleston City Council meetings are also scheduled for October 14, October 28, November 12 (rescheduled due to Veterans Day), and November 18. All sessions begin at 5:00 p.m.
All meetings are open to the public. They will take place in the City Hall Council Chamber at 80 Broad Street and will also be streamed online via the City’s YouTube Channel. Additional information about agendas and meeting materials can be found at charleston-sc.gov.
