The College of Charleston baseball team defeated USC Upstate 6-0 on April 14 at Patriots Point, marking their sixth straight victory. Junior Conner Frail pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, helping the Cougars improve to a 17-19 overall record while the Spartans fell to an even 19-19.
The win is significant as it extends Charleston’s winning streak and demonstrates strong pitching and timely hitting. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when redshirt junior Braeden Smith drove in sophomore Landon Penfield, who had singled earlier in the inning. Smith later scored on graduate Reece Holbrook’s ground-rule double, and freshman Jake Amman added another run with an RBI groundout.
Graduate Will Tippett hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, extending Charleston’s lead. Penfield finished his two-hit day with an RBI single in the eighth to bring home sophomore Alex LaCoste. Frail recorded his first Division I victory by striking out three batters without allowing a run. Sophomore Parker Sweeney contributed by pitching 2.1 perfect innings before graduate Davis Aiken closed out the game.
Charleston now holds a 9-5 record against USC Upstate and has achieved its third shutout victory in this series. This was also their first shutout of the season and their first since defeating William & Mary during last year’s CAA Championship tournament. The Cougars have performed well on Tuesdays this year with a 5-1 record and are now 20-5 on Tuesdays over the past three seasons.
Looking ahead, Charleston will travel to Williamsburg for a three-game conference series against William & Mary from April 17 to April 19.
