College of Charleston’s baseball team lost 14-4 to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point, ending their series with a defeat in eight innings.
Charleston fell behind 6-0 early but responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Graduate Reece Holbrook drew a one-out walk, and then redshirt senior Ethan Plyler hit a triple off the right field wall. This was followed by doubles from graduate Dylan Johnson and freshman Nick Diaz to left-center field, narrowing the deficit.
Plyler added another RBI in the next frame with a single into left field, marking his second multi-hit game of the season. Despite these efforts, Rutgers scored eight unanswered runs to secure both the win and the series victory over Charleston.
Freshman Sean McCabe made his collegiate debut during this game, while fellow first-year player Jake Amman recorded his first career hit. The loss puts Charleston at 1-3 all-time against Rutgers.
Looking ahead, Charleston will play its first midweek road game of the year against No. 6 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, February 17. The matchup at Spring Brooks Stadium is set for a 4 p.m. start and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
