The College of Charleston baseball team lost to Campbell University 12-8 on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point, according to an April 25 announcement. The Cougars now have a record of 20 wins and 22 losses overall, with a conference record of 10-10. The Camels improved their record to 28-14 overall and are now 19-4 in league play.
This game was notable for strong individual performances from the Cougars despite the loss. Graduate player Dylan Johnson went five-for-five at the plate and scored three runs. Sophomore Alex LaCoste had three hits in five at bats and drove in three runs during the game.
LaCoste tied the score early with a single in the first inning, then later scored on a two-run triple by redshirt senior Ethan Plyler. Charleston took an early lead by adding three more runs in the second inning after singles from Johnson and LaCoste, followed by another RBI hit from Plyler.
Campbell responded with five runs in the fifth inning to take a brief lead before Charleston tied it again later that inning. LaCoste drove in his third run of the day with a single up the middle, scoring Johnson after his leadoff double in the sixth inning. However, Campbell added two runs each in both the seventh and eighth innings, plus another insurance run in the ninth to secure their win.
The loss puts Charleston’s all-time record against Campbell at 16 wins and 23 losses. LaCoste extended his hitting streak to twelve consecutive games and has hits in twenty-seven of his last twenty-eight contests. Johnson set a new career high with five hits after previously reaching four earlier this week against Charleston Southern; he joins LaCoste as Cougars players who have achieved five-hit games this season.
Charleston will finish its series against Campbell on Sunday with a scheduled matchup at Patriots Point.
