The College of Charleston men’s basketball team will face Towson on Thursday, January 15, in their only regular season matchup. The game will be broadcast live at 8:00 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
This meeting brings together two of the top three teams from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Poll. Towson is ranked first and Charleston third. Three players named to the Preseason All-CAA First Team will feature: Colby Duggan for Charleston, and Tyler Tejada and Dylan Williamson for Towson.
Charleston enters the game with an 11-6 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play. The Cougars lead the all-time series against Towson, having won 19 out of 29 matchups, including six of the last seven games.
The Cougars are coming off a recent victory over Hampton, winning 74-70 at TD Arena on January 10. Colby Duggan led all scorers with 22 points—his highest as a Cougar so far—and Jlynn Counter contributed 19 points along with seven assists. Counter has now reached double-digit scoring in eight consecutive games and is approaching his 1,500th career point. He currently stands third in the CAA for field goal percentage (.503) and assists per game (4.8).
With this win over Hampton, head coach Chris Mack’s squad extended its winning streak to seven games, which is currently the ninth longest in Division I men’s basketball nationally. The Cougars are ranked No. 22 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
Chol Machot has emerged as one of college basketball’s top shot blockers this season, ranking fourth nationally in total blocks (48) and fifth in blocks per game (2.82). He has recorded at least one block in every game but one this season; his performance at Elon included seven blocks—six coming before halftime—which marks the second-highest single-game total in program history. Alongside Christian Reeves—the tallest frontcourt pairing in their conference—the duo averages nearly sixteen rebounds and more than sixteen points per contest during CAA play.
Charleston also excels at drawing fouls and converting free throws; they rank among national leaders with an average of over twenty-five attempts and nearly nineteen made free throws per game.
Towson enters Thursday’s contest with a record of nine wins and nine losses overall but just one win from five conference outings so far this season. Both teams have faced William & Mary and Hampton; Charleston defeated both while Towson lost both contests but recently secured its first league victory by beating Northeastern.
Tyler Tejada leads Towson offensively with an average of almost seventeen points per game, followed by Dylan Williamson at fourteen-and-a-half points, while Jack Doumbia Jr adds just over ten points per contest. Caleb Embeya leads their rebounding efforts at nearly six boards per game. As a team, Towson tops the conference by averaging more than fourteen offensive rebounds each outing.
Thursday’s action will be called by Pat McCarthy and Dalen Cuff from SECU Arena on CBS Sports Network coverage. Fans can also listen to Everett German provide radio commentary via The Varsity App.
