Charleston clinched a place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament on May 1 after defeating Towson 7-5 on the road.
This result is significant as it marks Charleston’s second consecutive year qualifying for the CAA Tournament and their first time doing so under head coach Maggie Mrowka. The team now holds an overall record of 26-27 this season, with a conference record of 14-9.
In the game, Julia Sitterding played a key role by going three-for-two at bat, scoring one run and driving in two runs. After falling behind early, Sitterding tripled in the third inning to put Charleston on the board, with Sierra Paradis scoring from first base. Leela Langston then tied the game with an RBI single. Although Towson responded with a two-run home run, Charleston managed to tie again in the fifth inning through runs driven in by Paradis and Sitterding. Savannah Scott later grounded out to bring Langston home for Charleston’s first lead.
The score was tied at five heading into the seventh inning when Austy Miller and Halle Cannon reached base on errors. Scott drove in Miller for what would become the winning run, followed by Sam Horn doubling to allow Cannon to score another run. Campbell Schaen contributed from the mound by pitching 2.1 innings and striking out three batters.
According to information provided by Charleston Cougars Women’s Softball, this will be their ninth appearance in the CAA Tournament since joining in 2014. The team collected ten hits against Towson during this match-up, including three doubles and one triple.
Charleston is scheduled to play Towson again on Saturday, May 2 for their regular season finale at 1 p.m., with further details about their tournament participation expected soon.
