Mackenzie Mathis delivered her second consecutive complete game, allowing only one run as the College of Charleston Cougars secured a 2-1 victory over UConn on Saturday at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

With this win, Charleston improved its season record to 6-4. The team later faced Western Carolina and lost 10-4 in their second game of the day.

In the opening matchup against UConn, Mathis kept the Huskies scoreless in the first inning with just ten pitches. Bronwyn Conroy singled and stole her eleventh base of the season before Leela Langston tripled, enabling Conroy to score. In the fifth inning, Conroy walked and again stole second base; Austy Miller’s single brought her home for Charleston’s second run. UConn scored its only run in the sixth inning. The Cougars managed four hits from four different players during this contest.

Against Western Carolina, Erin McDaid made her collegiate debut as starting pitcher. After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, Halle Cannon’s single allowed Sally Trent to score. Western Carolina added three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Cannon scored on a sacrifice fly by Samantha Horn, but Western Carolina extended their lead with three additional runs that same inning. Charleston used six pitchers throughout this game, with Ryley Kutter closing out by shutting down WCU in the seventh.

Mathis finished her outing against UConn with six strikeouts and six hits allowed. Conroy notched her twelfth stolen base of the season and leads Charleston with ten runs scored so far this year. Both Langston and Conroy have sixteen hits each, while Hailey Seymour tops the team with twelve RBIs.

The Lowcountry Classic concludes Sunday morning with Sacred Heart facing UMass at 9 a.m., followed by Charleston playing UPenn about thirty minutes after that first game ends.
