The College of Charleston baseball team secured a 4-3 victory over No. 6 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.

Charleston’s pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts against the Chanticleers, marking the Cougars’ third consecutive win over Coastal Carolina. Freshman Carter Harrington struck out seven batters in three innings, while graduate student Kurt Rogers pitched the final three innings and was credited with the win.

Coastal Carolina took an early lead by scoring in the second and fourth innings. Charleston responded in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a defensive error to get on the scoreboard. In the seventh, graduate Reese Holbrook tied the game with a single that drove in senior Payton Frehner.

After Coastal regained the lead later in the seventh, Charleston moved ahead for good with two runs in the eighth inning. Frehner’s RBI brought home redshirt senior Ethan Plyler, and redshirt sophomore Jackson Berini added a sacrifice fly to score graduate Dylan Johnson.

On pitching contributions, Kaden Myers allowed just one run over 1.2 innings, and redshirt sophomore Ryan Hench held Coastal scoreless through 1.1 frames before Rogers finished out the game.

Charleston has now improved its record against Coastal Carolina to 29-27. The Cougars have earned back-to-back ranked victories over their opponent, with nine of their wins coming when Coastal was nationally ranked—all since 2009. Head coach Chad Holbrook has now achieved eight wins over ranked teams as Charleston’s coach; four of those have been against Coastal Carolina.

The win marks Charleston’s first top-10 victory since defeating No. 2 Texas in 2022. The team also noted that for two consecutive seasons, a freshman pitcher has made his first collegiate start against a ranked opponent—this year it was Carter Harrington; last season Drew Medley threw 2.1 scoreless innings during a win over another ranked team.

Charleston will next host South Alabama for a three-game series from February 20-22, followed by a single game against Air Force on February 23 at Patriots Point. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the ticket office.
