College of Charleston’s baseball team lost both games in a doubleheader against Rutgers on Saturday at Patriots Point, with final scores of 13-2 and 5-2.
In the first game, redshirt junior Carson Bryant pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one run while striking out two batters. The Cougars held a 2-1 lead through five innings before Rutgers added four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, followed by three more in the ninth to finish at 13-2. Junior Braeden Smith recorded two hits, an RBI, and scored once. Graduate student Reece Holbrook stole three bases, marking a personal best.
During the second game, Rutgers established a 5-0 lead by the third inning. Graduate Will Tippett brought in Charleston’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Smith drove in another run on a fielder’s choice during the seventh. Sophomore Drew Medley delivered two scoreless innings from the bullpen, while redshirt sophomore Kevin Samonsky did not allow any runs over the last three frames. Freshman Nick Diaz, redshirt sophomore Jackson Berini, and junior Brent Gibbs each had two hits.
Charleston now trails Rutgers 1-2 in their all-time series. Gibbs has collected multiple hits in two games this weekend.
The teams will conclude Opening Weekend with another matchup scheduled for noon on Sunday, February 15 at Patriots Point. The game will be broadcast live on FloCollege.
