Charleston falls to South Alabama in seven-inning opener

Charleston Cougars baseball team suffered a 16-2 defeat against South Alabama on Friday at Patriots Point. South Alabama established an early advantage, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding runs in six of the seven innings played.

Senior Payton Frehner drove in both runs for Charleston with a two-run single during the fourth inning. Freshman Will Burgess made his first collegiate appearance as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, while redshirt sophomore Asher Lucas recorded his first career strikeout.

Historically, Charleston holds a 5-2 record against South Alabama. The teams are scheduled to play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Patriots Point.
