The College of Charleston men’s basketball team lost a double-overtime game to Stony Brook, 112-106, on Saturday night in Stony Brook, New York. The matchup was closely contested, featuring 17 lead changes and 14 ties. With this defeat, Charleston’s overall record moves to 11-8 and 4-2 in conference play.

Charleston started the game strong but experienced a scoring drought before Christian Reeves tied the game at 22 with an old-fashioned three-point play. Stony Brook built a lead late in the first half, sending Charleston into halftime trailing 46-37. Jlynn Counter led the Cougars with nine points at the break.

In the second half, Chol Machot and Connor Hickman hit consecutive three-pointers for Charleston as part of an early run that cut into Stony Brook’s lead. The teams continued trading baskets throughout regulation.

Chris Davis Jr.’s third three-pointer of the half and two free throws from Colby Duggan tied the score with six and a half minutes left. Despite not making a field goal for five minutes late in regulation, Charleston stayed close by converting all their free throw attempts during that stretch. A dunk by Machot gave Charleston a brief one-point lead before Stony Brook responded with a three-pointer; Martin Kalu then sent the game to overtime with two free throws.

After both teams scored evenly in the first overtime period, forcing a second extra frame at 94-94, Stony Brook managed to pull ahead late and secure their first-ever win over Charleston in nine meetings.

Counter finished as Charleston’s top scorer with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Hickman added 18 points including four three-pointers. Duggan recorded a career-high six assists along with his 13 points. Machot contributed 16 points while Davis Jr. and Reeves each had 11; Reeves and Kalu shared rebounding honors for Charleston with seven each.

Charleston shot 47% from the field compared to Stony Brook’s 52%. The Cougars outrebounded their opponent by seven but suffered their first back-to-back conference losses since the 2023-24 season. This was also their highest-scoring game so far this year and marked their first overtime contest of the season.

Charleston will next host Campbell at TD Arena on Thursday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m.
