The City of Charleston is closely watching a tropical system off the Southeast coast. According to recent forecasts, the storm is expected to turn east before reaching the area, which should reduce its impact on Charleston. However, residents are advised to prepare for periods of heavy rain from Monday evening through Tuesday evening, with rainfall totals between 2 and 4 inches possible.
Sandbag distribution will end at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 28. Sandbags are available for self-service pickup at three locations: Hampton Park (Peninsula), Bayview Soccer Complex (James Island), and Catholic Diocese Site (West Ashley). Residents are asked to bring their own shovels if possible and be considerate as supplies are limited.
The city has delayed opening storm parking garages until Tuesday and may not open them at all depending on how the forecast develops. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
City crews continue efforts to clear drains, stage barricades, and monitor low-lying areas in preparation for possible flooding or other storm impacts. The city will adjust its response as needed if conditions change.
Residents are reminded: “Never drive through standing water. Secure outdoor items and clear gutters near your property. Keep phones charged and essential supplies on hand. Follow official forecasts before traveling.”
