The College of Charleston men’s basketball team secured a 74-61 victory over North Carolina A&T on Thursday night in Greensboro. With this result, the Cougars improved their overall record to 18-10 and now hold an 11-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
Charleston started the game strongly, taking a 10-0 lead with contributions from Christian Reeves, Chris Davis Jr., Martin Kalu, and Jlynn Counter. The team prevented North Carolina A&T from getting any second-chance opportunities in the opening minutes.
After back-to-back three-pointers by Connor Hickman, Charleston extended its advantage to 23-9 midway through the first half. North Carolina A&T responded with an 8-0 run, but Charleston closed the half with a 9-0 run capped by a Davis Jr. three-pointer at the buzzer, leading 41-26 at halftime.
In the second half, Charleston built its largest lead at 47-30 before North Carolina A&T mounted an 18-0 run to reduce the deficit to four points. The Cougars then answered with a 7-0 run over ninety seconds and maintained control for the remainder of the game.
Jlynn Counter led all scorers with 16 points while adding seven assists and four rebounds. Chris Davis Jr. achieved his first career double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Christian Reeves contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
Charleston finished shooting 44 percent from the field compared to North Carolina A&T’s 41 percent. In the first half, Charleston shot 53 percent from beyond the arc. The Cougars also won the rebounding battle by a margin of three and recorded assists on most of their made baskets.
Charleston remains unbeaten this season when leading at halftime.
