Charleston opens warming center as temperatures drop below freezing

The City of Charleston announced it will open a warming center tonight in response to freezing temperatures. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Salvation Army.

The warming center will be located at 2135 Ashley River Rd, Charleston, SC 29407, within the Salvation Army facility in West Ashley. Doors are scheduled to open at 8:00 p.m., and guests can remain overnight until 7:00 a.m., when temperatures are expected to rise.

Residents needing transportation can use CARTA buses from the Peninsula at 63 Mary St, Charleston, SC 29403, up until 8:00 p.m. The city stated that “the public will be notified if additional routes are added.”

The center will provide food, water, and cots for those seeking shelter. The maximum capacity is set at 50 people.
