Charleston Police arrest registered sex offender after Hampton Park incident

The Charleston Police Department has arrested Jerome Curry, 44, of Charleston, following an incident of indecent exposure in Hampton Park on January 5, 2026. Officers responded to reports at approximately 5:15 p.m. that a man was exposing himself and making sexual advances toward people in the park.

When officers arrived, Curry attempted to flee and then assaulted several officers by punching, kicking, and spitting as they tried to detain him. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to a local hospital for treatment before being released into custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Curry faces multiple charges including two counts of indecent exposure, four counts of assault on police while resisting arrest, two counts of throwing bodily fluids, simple possession of marijuana, prohibited activities in a public park, and disorderly conduct. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident; both were treated at a hospital and later released.

According to authorities, Curry is listed on the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry due to a previous conviction for indecent exposure. At the time of this event, he was under supervision by South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Services for a violent crime.
