Charleston Police investigate fatal work zone accident on I-526

A worker was killed in a collision on Interstate 526 East near the Westmoreland Bridge late on November 24, according to the Charleston Police Department. The Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the case.

Police reported that a pickup truck traveling eastbound struck one worker’s hand before hitting a second worker within an active work zone. The second worker suffered severe injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where they died. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

The eastbound lanes of I-526 were closed until approximately 1:45 a.m. while investigators worked at the site.

No charges have been filed as police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are seeking additional information from witnesses or anyone with relevant details. This fatality represents the eleventh traffic-related death investigated by Charleston Police this year. Of these, six involved auto-pedestrian collisions, four were single-vehicle incidents, and one was a multi-vehicle crash.
