Charleston Police seek help identifying suspect vehicle in fatal hit-and-run

The Charleston Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run that took place on January 6, 2026. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on the Ashley River Bridge as it leads into downtown Charleston.

According to police, a bicyclist was traveling on the bridge when they were struck by a car. The vehicle left the scene after the collision, and the victim died at the location. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Sherif Mahmoud, age 36, of Egypt.

Investigators are looking for a black or dark blue Lincoln MKX manufactured between 2011 and 2015. They report that the vehicle should have noticeable front-end damage and missing pieces from its front bumper, especially in areas shown in photos provided by authorities. Its last known whereabouts were on an exit ramp leading to Lockwood Drive toward Bee Street in downtown Charleston.

The police department has asked anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 843-720-2422 and request to speak with the on-duty Central Detective. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online at www.charleston-sc.gov/tips.
