College of Charleston basketball players Jlynn Counter and Chris Davis Jr. have received weekly honors from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) after the team ended its regular season with two wins.
Jlynn Counter, a graduate student, was named CAA Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Over two games against Hampton and UNCW, Counter averaged 16 points per game on 45 percent shooting and made 80 percent of his free throws. He also led the league last week with an average of six assists and 2.5 steals per game, while collecting 3.5 rebounds per contest. In the win over UNCW, Counter scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help Charleston come back from a 15-point deficit and secure a 79-76 road victory. He also recorded seven assists in that game. Against Hampton, he contributed nine points, five assists, and four rebounds. According to the College of Charleston press release: “Counter’s four weekly awards are the most of any player in the league this season.”
Freshman guard Chris Davis Jr. earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 13 points and 5.5 rebounds during Charleston’s two road victories. Davis scored a season-best 17 points at UNCW, including three late three-pointers such as a game-tying shot with just over three minutes left in regulation. He added five rebounds and three steals in that matchup as well. At Hampton on Thursday, Davis finished with nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and no turnovers.
The Cougars will enter postseason play as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Air Force Reserve CAA Men’s Basketball Championship tournament; they will learn their full bracket placement once regular season conference games conclude on Tuesday.
“Counter’s four weekly awards are the most of any player in the league this season,” according to College of Charleston.
