The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs has announced a call for submissions for “The Message is Clear: A Mentored Photography Exhibition.” This exhibition will be held at the City Gallery from February through May 2026 and aims to provide both artistic recognition and professional mentorship to photographers across South Carolina.
Up to ten photographers will be selected for the juried exhibition. Those chosen will have their work professionally printed by Redux Contemporary Art Center and displayed at the City Gallery. In addition, they will receive mentorship from internationally recognized photographer Nigel Parry, who will conduct two in-person sessions that include both individual and group opportunities.
Nigel Parry’s career includes editorial, fine art, and commercial photography, with his work featured in publications such as Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, and Rolling Stone. His photographs are part of collections at the National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London. Anne Quattlebaum of City Gallery said, “Nigel Parry’s commitment to mentorship makes this an extraordinary opportunity for South Carolina photographers. Participants will gain invaluable insights from one of the medium’s most respected practitioners.”
Eligibility for submission is limited to current residents of South Carolina. Photographers may submit up to ten images created within the past two years. All experience levels are welcome, but participation requires attendance at two mandatory in-person meetings in Charleston. The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2025; there is a $20 submission fee. Artists selected for participation will be notified in mid-November 2025.
City Gallery is owned by the City of Charleston and managed by its Office of Cultural Affairs. It presents exhibitions featuring contemporary art from local, regional, national, and international artists with a focus on the Lowcountry region.
