Charleston softball lost 4-3 to the University of North Carolina Wilmington in a 10-inning game on April 25 at Patriots Point.
The loss brings Charleston’s overall record to 24-26, with a conference record of 12-8. The close contest was decided in extra innings after both teams traded leads throughout the game.
Jules Raymond pitched seven innings for Charleston and recorded five strikeouts, tying her season high. Bronwyn Conroy started the first inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Leela Langston, giving Charleston an early lead. UNCW responded by scoring two runs across the second and third innings, but Halle Cannon tied it up with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Raymond held UNCW scoreless from the fourth through part of the sixth inning before allowing a bases-loaded walk that gave UNCW its third run. In response, Langston drove in another run in the seventh inning to tie the game again and force extra innings. Raymond struck out two batters and made a groundout play to end the top of the eighth without allowing any runs.
Julia Sitterding went four-for-four at bat for Charleston, while six different Cougars contributed to their total of eleven hits. Despite reaching second base in the ninth inning, Charleston could not bring home another run. UNCW scored once more in the tenth inning for what proved to be the winning run.
Charleston will play its final home game of the season against UNCW on Sunday, April 26 at Patriots Point. The series finale is scheduled for noon.
