Charleston Southern University’s women’s basketball team secured a decisive 88-62 victory over Presbyterian College on Saturday at Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The win improved CSU’s record to 8-16 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while Presbyterian dropped to 3-21 and 1-10 in the Big South.
The Buccaneers established control early, opening the game with an 8-0 run and never trailing throughout the contest. By the end of the first quarter, CSU led 23-13 after shooting over 61 percent from the field and forcing four turnovers. The team maintained its momentum into the second quarter, matching its earlier scoring output for a halftime lead of 46-27.
Tyonna Bailey was a standout performer for Charleston Southern, registering 26 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Nevaeh Jones contributed significantly on defense with five blocks and added 14 points. Sydney Bradley achieved a career-best with 11 points, making all three of her attempts from beyond the arc, while Caelan Ellis scored in double figures for the twentieth time this season.
Charleston Southern finished with efficient shooting statistics: converting nearly 56 percent from the field, over 44 percent from three-point range, and more than 91 percent at the free throw line. The Buccaneers also out-rebounded Presbyterian by five and outscored them in the paint by eight points.
Presbyterian’s Ja’Cia Cunningham led her team with 12 points, followed by Ore Ogunwole with ten.
The turning point came during an extended run that spanned late in the first quarter into early in the second; Charleston Southern scored eleven unanswered points to establish a double-digit lead that remained intact for the rest of the game.
Afterward, Bailey reflected on her performance: “Bailey recorded her career-high 13 rebounds to go with 26 points.” Jones’ defensive effort was also noted: “Jones’ five blocks anchored CSU’s interior defense.” Head coach Clarisse White commented on Bradley’s achievement: “Bradley scored a career-high 11 points.”
Charleston Southern will continue its Big South schedule next week with two road games. Their next matchup is against Gardner-Webb University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
