Charleston Southern University began its 2026 baseball season with a 6-3 win over Bucknell on Friday night at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark. The Buccaneers overcame three separate deficits before taking the lead for good in the seventh inning.
Bucknell started strong, with Michael Trommer hitting a solo home run in the first inning. Charleston Southern responded in the bottom of the inning after Lucas Pringle drew a walk, stole second base, and scored following a Bucknell throwing error.
Bucknell regained the lead in the third after a failed pickoff attempt allowed a runner to score from third base. The Bucs tied it again in the fourth when Caden Wolfley scored on another Bison infield error with two outs.
Michael Chiaravallo put Bucknell ahead 3-2 with a solo home run in the seventh. In their half of the seventh, Charleston Southern loaded the bases after an error, a single by Nathan Martinez, and walks to Caden Wolfley and Tyler Wright. Wright’s walk forced in Alex Marot to tie the game.
A pitching change brought Blake Edgmon to the plate, who hit a double into left center field, clearing the bases and giving Charleston Southern its first lead of the night at 6-3.
Titus Von Kapff started for Charleston Southern, pitching 4.2 innings and recording five strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Tyler Henshaw entered in relief during the fifth inning and pitched 4.1 innings, striking out nine batters and giving up only two hits and one walk.
“Blake Edgmon drilled a double into the gap in left center when the bases were loaded, emptying them and pushing them ahead for the first time of the game with Tyler Henshaw dealing nine strikeouts in relief work to claim the win,” according to Charleston Southern.
As a team, Charleston Southern managed three hits—one each from Chandler Tuupo, Nathan Martinez, and Blake Edgmon—but benefited from ten walks and three hit batters.
Both teams are scheduled to play again Saturday afternoon at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., with game two set to start approximately 45 minutes after game one ends.
