Charleston Southern University won its weekend baseball series against UNC Asheville, according to an April 26 announcement. The Buccaneers split their final two games on Sunday, securing a tie for fourth place in Big South play with a 9-9 record and two series remaining this spring.
The outcome of the series is significant as it affects Charleston Southern’s standing in the conference and their potential postseason opportunities. The team’s performance demonstrated resilience through weather delays and high-scoring innings.
The second game of the series began Saturday but was interrupted by rain, forcing play to resume Sunday morning. Charleston Southern took an early lead before UNC Asheville responded, resulting in several lead changes. After falling behind due to a five-run inning from UNC Asheville and another weather delay, the Buccaneers ultimately lost game two with a final score of 13-8. Alex Marot led Charleston Southern at the plate with three hits and two runs batted in.
In game three on Sunday, Charleston Southern started strong with six runs in the first inning. Although UNC Asheville managed to tie and later take the lead, Charleston Southern mounted an eight-run rally in the eighth inning to reclaim control. The teams were tied after nine innings, but Charleston Southern scored three runs in extra innings to win 19-16. Blake Edgmon contributed significantly with multiple hits and three RBIs.
Pitching performances included Matt Gallant starting for four innings while Jack Bunnell earned the win by pitching nearly three scoreless innings at the end of game three.
Looking ahead, Charleston Southern will face Georgia Southern on Tuesday before taking a break for finals.
