Charleston Southern University’s women’s basketball team lost to Longwood University 96-69 on Wednesday night at the Joan Perry Brock Center in Farmville, Virginia. With this result, Charleston Southern’s record stands at 8-20 overall and 6-9 in Big South Conference play, while Longwood improves to 19-9 overall and 10-5 in conference games.
Longwood took control of the game early, building an 11-point lead by halftime after shooting 50 percent from the field in the second quarter. The Lancers widened their advantage in the third quarter by outscoring Charleston Southern 25-11. Although Charleston Southern scored 20 points and shot 40 percent from the floor in the final period, Longwood responded with 23 points to secure the win.
Tyonna Bailey led Charleston Southern with 18 points and seven rebounds. This marked her fourteenth time leading her team in scoring this season and her twenty-first game reaching double figures. Caelan Ellis added 14 points for her twenty-third double-digit performance of the year. Freshman Nevaeh Jones contributed 11 points—her fourth double-digit game—and Alba Garcia finished with ten points for her second such outing this season.
For Longwood, Malea Brown scored a game-high 25 points.
Charleston Southern made just under 39 percent of its field goals (24-of-62) and shot eight-for-twenty-five from three-point range. The Buccaneers were outrebounded by Longwood, who had a margin of eighteen boards (53-35). The Lancers also dominated inside, scoring forty points in the paint compared to Charleston Southern’s twenty-six, while converting thirty-two points off turnovers and adding twenty-eight fast-break points.
The Buccaneers allowed a season-high ninety-six points during this matchup.
Charleston Southern will finish its regular season schedule against Winthrop on Saturday, February 28 at home on Senior Day.
