The Charleston Southern women’s basketball team is preparing for its third week of Big South Conference play with two games on the schedule. The Buccaneers will travel to UNC Asheville for a game on Wednesday night before returning home to face Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon.
Charleston Southern currently holds a 2-2 record in conference play and stands at 4-13 overall. The team recently experienced a close loss to Winthrop, where junior guard Tyonna Bailey delivered a standout performance with 30 points and 12 rebounds. This double-double was her first career achievement in this category and marked the second highest single-game scoring output by a Charleston Southern player this season.
“Tyonna Bailey continues to anchor the Buccaneer offense, leading the team at 15.6 points per game ranking third in the conference in that mark,” according to the team’s report. Bailey’s contributions have been significant for the Buccaneers as they look to improve their standing in league play.
Another key player, Caelan Ellis, is averaging 12.4 points per game and has made 47 three-pointers so far this season, placing her second in the Big South Conference for that statistic. Asha Sra has also played an important role as facilitator, averaging 4.1 assists per game—second best in the conference.
The Buccaneers lead the Big South Conference with an average of 8.9 made three-pointers per game.
UNC Asheville enters Wednesday’s matchup with a record of 6-11 overall and 1-3 within conference games. The Bulldogs’ top scorer is Nia Green, who averages 14.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting over 56 percent from the field. Aileen Marquez contributes perimeter scoring with an average of 10.4 points per game and leads UNC Asheville in three-pointers made.
Gardner-Webb comes into Saturday’s contest at Charleston Southern holding a record of 5-12 overall and is currently 2-1 in conference play after recent wins over Winthrop and USC Upstate. The Runnin’ Bulldogs distribute their scoring across multiple players averaging between eight and thirteen points each game, while also ranking near the top of their league defensively by forcing more than seventeen turnovers per contest.
