Charleston Southern University’s women’s basketball team achieved a notable win over Presbyterian College, 77-73, at the Templeton Center on Friday night. The Buccaneers matched their program’s best single-game field goal percentage by shooting 60 percent from the floor, a record last set in 2008 against North Texas.
The game began with Charleston Southern making seven of its first eleven shots and holding an 18-17 lead after the first quarter. The team continued its strong offensive performance into the second quarter, outscoring Presbyterian 22-20. Nevaeh Jones was perfect from the field in the first half.
Presbyterian briefly took control after halftime but Charleston Southern responded to keep the game tied at 53 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final period, Tyonna Bailey scored 14 of her total 16 points to help secure the victory for Charleston Southern.
Individually, Nevaeh Jones recorded career highs with 15 points and seven blocks—the block total tying a program record for most in a single game. Asha Sra achieved her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. Caelan Ellis added 13 points and three assists, while Bailey led scoring for Charleston Southern for the eighth time this season.
Charleston Southern finished with advantages in several statistical categories including points in the paint (36-32) and bench scoring (33-11). The team also made six of twelve three-point attempts and converted nearly 74 percent of its free throws.
The Buccaneers will continue Big South Conference play on Wednesday, January 28 when they host High Point at Buccaneer Fieldhouse.
“Nevaeh Jones set career highs with 15 points and seven blocks, with the block total tied for the most in a single game in program history,” according to Charleston Southern University Athletics. “CSU’s 60.0% field goal percentage tied the highest in program history. The other time CSU shot 60.0% in a game was back in 2008 against North Texas.”
