The College of Charleston women’s basketball team lost to Monmouth 69-57 at the OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The defeat marks only the first conference loss for Charleston this season, bringing their record to 20-4 overall and 12-1 in league play. Monmouth improved to 16-8 and 9-4 in the conference.

Charleston started strong, with Tyja Beans scoring eight points in the opening quarter. The teams were tied at 18 after the first period. However, Monmouth opened the second quarter with a six-point run and extended its lead to 38-27 by halftime. Although Charleston scored early in the third quarter, Monmouth responded quickly and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout most of the game.

Junior Grace Ezebilo led Charleston with her sixth double-double of the season, recording 10 points and 11 rebounds. She has now reached double-digit rebounds for the nineteenth time this year. Junior Taryn Barbot also scored 10 points and achieved her 1,500th career point as a Cougar, moving into tenth place on Charleston’s all-time scoring list. Taylor Barbot contributed seven points along with six rebounds and three assists, while Tyja Beans finished with ten points and four rebounds. Sophomore Leah Philpotts added ten points and was perfect from the free throw line.

Monmouth outshot Charleston by making 49 percent of their field goals compared to Charleston’s 33.9 percent shooting. The Hawks also excelled from beyond the arc, hitting at a rate of 44 percent while Charleston managed just under nineteen percent. Monmouth outrebounded Charleston by a margin of fourteen but committed twenty-one turnovers due to defensive pressure from Charleston.

Charleston now holds a record of one win and five losses against Monmouth all-time.

The Cougars will next travel to Towson for a matchup on Friday, February 20. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off and will be available via FloCollege streaming service; additional information can be found on the women’s basketball schedule page at cofcsports.com.
