The College of Charleston women’s tennis team will participate in the fourth annual UTR Sports NIT Championship beginning May 5 in Rome, Georgia, according to an April 30 announcement.

The tournament offers postseason experience for men’s and women’s teams and is set to take place at the Rome Tennis Center from May 5-7. The event features eight teams in a single elimination format. Seedings are determined by the April 29 UTR Sports College Team Rankings, which use a combination of Power 6 ratings, win-loss records, and strength of schedule.

Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said, “We are excited to receive an invitation to the NIT hosted by UTR. Our team has had a great season and to be rewarded with a postseason bid shows that the hard work has truly paid off. As a coach who is retiring, this is a great way to end my career. North Texas presents a great challenge but I know our team will give it their all.”

Charleston enters as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 2 North Texas at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. The full field includes Kansas State (No.1), North Texas (No.2), Arkansas State (No.3), North Alabama (No.4), Army (No.5), McNeese State (No.6), Charleston (No.7), and Northern Illinois (No.8). If Charleston wins its opening match against North Texas, it will play either Kansas State or Northern Illinois in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The Cougars have posted an overall record of 16-8 this season and finished third in their conference tournament after reaching the semifinals for the second year running.
