Citadel baseball defeats Marshall behind strong pitching performance

The Citadel Bulldogs secured a 4-3 win over Marshall at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Friday evening, bringing both teams to a 2-2 record for the season.

The game started with The Citadel’s Jayden Williams and Miles Barbrey hitting consecutive singles in the first inning. Zach Hunt then drove in the opening run with a groundout. Phillips Daniels extended the lead in the third inning with a solo home run.

Hunt contributed again in the fifth inning by hitting an RBI double, pushing The Citadel ahead 4-0. In response, Marshall’s Ethan Murdoch hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, narrowing the gap to 4-2. Marshall added their final run by capitalizing on a wild pitch and groundout.

Daniels finished with two hits, including his home run, scored twice, and recorded an RBI. Hunt had two doubles and an RBI as well. Aryan Patel reached base twice, stole two bases, and also contributed an RBI.

On the pitching side for The Citadel, Will Holmes delivered 5.2 innings without allowing any runs while striking out nine batters—a career high—earning him the win. Michael Gibson closed out the game with 3.1 innings pitched and five strikeouts to earn his first career save. Together, Holmes and Gibson combined for 14 strikeouts.

Marshall’s Bryce Blevins pitched six innings with eight hits allowed and four runs (three earned), striking out eight but taking the loss. Davis Gunn provided relief over 1.2 scoreless innings with three hits surrendered and one strikeout; Charlie Krebs retired one batter on three pitches late in the game.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Marshall again on Saturday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park starting at 11 am.
