Citadel defeats Army 14-8 to sweep weekend baseball series

The Citadel baseball team improved its record to 4-2 after a 14-8 win over Army at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston on Sunday. The Bulldogs swept the weekend series against the Black Knights, taking control early in the game.

Zach Hunt started the scoring for The Citadel with a three-run home run in the first inning. Army responded with an RBI single from Josiah Overbeek in the second inning to make it 3-1.

Jayden Williams extended the Bulldogs’ lead with a two-run triple, and Michael Gibson drove in another run, bringing the score to 6-1 after two innings. Army’s William Parker hit a two-run homer in the third inning to close the gap to 6-3, but The Citadel answered with another run on a wild pitch.

Army’s Thomas Schreck delivered an RBI single before Phillips Daniels added an RBI single for The Citadel, making it 8-4.

In the eighth inning, TJ Anderson hit a three-run home run after Miles Barbrey and Daniels reached base. Landon Kahl was hit by a pitch and Jackson Proctor drew a bases-loaded walk as The Citadel increased their lead further.

Army scored four runs in the top of the ninth but could not catch up.

Williams finished with three runs and two RBIs including a triple. Hunt had three runs, two hits, and three RBIs along with his second consecutive game with a home run. Daniels recorded two hits for his third straight multi-hit game. Barbrey stole two bases and walked twice. Anderson contributed his first home run of the season and drove in three runs.

Riley Ballard pitched 2.2 innings for The Citadel, striking out five and earning the win. Andrew Bowers pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit while striking out four batters.

Robbie Penswick took the loss for Army after giving up seven earned runs on five hits over 2.2 innings pitched. William Leahy relieved him with three innings of work, allowing one earned run but walking four batters.

The Citadel will next play Florida State in Tallahassee from February 27 to March 1.
