City of Charleston offices and facilities will open at noon on Monday due to ongoing icy conditions. The city is monitoring weather forecasts that predict continued freezing temperatures, which may lead to hazardous travel.
Although snowfall has ended and skies have cleared, many roads remain dangerous. City officials are urging both residents and employees to use caution when traveling. Refreezing overnight could create black ice, as temperatures and wind chills are expected to stay below freezing.
Crews are working to salt the roadways and will continue these efforts as low temperatures persist. Officials recommend that residents avoid driving if possible until conditions improve.
Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) intends to resume service by 1:00 p.m. on Monday but will keep assessing road safety throughout the day and night for any additional impacts.
Warming centers across the area remain open for those needing shelter from the cold. The Shaw Community Center at 20 Mary Street in Charleston will close at 7:00 a.m. Monday, with a possible extension through Wednesday depending on weather developments. It will reopen again at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening. Other warming centers operating through Sunday include Holy City Missions at Aldersgate Methodist in North Charleston, Seacoast Summerville Warming Center, Seacoast North Charleston Warming Center, and Hibben United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, each with varying hours of operation and available transportation options via CARTA routes.
Residents can check updated transit schedules for CARTA Routes 10 and 13 on official channels.
The city is accepting donations at Shaw Community Center between noon and 5:00 p.m., today or tomorrow, for items such as new socks, undergarments, coats, blankets, warm clothing items, and non-perishable food.
Residents seeking information or wishing to report damage can call the Citizen Services Line at 843-724-7311. For emergencies requiring police, fire or medical response, citizens should call 911.
Updates will be posted through official City of Charleston communication channels including their website (Charleston-sc.gov), social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook and X, as well as the Citizen Services Desk by phone or email.
City officials stated they “remain in close contact with Charleston County and the National Weather Service and will provide updates as conditions change.”
