The Citadel defeated Presbyterian 7-2 in the opening game of a three-game weekend baseball series on May 1, led by starting pitcher Will Holmes at Elton Pollock Field.

The win marks an important start for The Citadel (23-22, 6-9 Southern Conference) as they look to build momentum late in the season. Holmes pitched seven innings, striking out eight and allowing only two runs on five hits and four walks. Ben Brash and CJ Van Slooten closed out the final two innings, combining for one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

Six different Bulldogs contributed runs batted in, with Sam Dansky recording two hits. Michael Gibson and TJ Anderson each had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI; Anderson also stole two bases. Aryan Patel added a hit for an RBI while leading the team with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Head coach Russell Triplett said after the game: “Good start to the series. We didn’t do anything great, but played solid in all phases of the game. Holmes gave us a quality start and our bullpen continued to be good. We played defense and took advantage of a few mistakes they made and executed early in the game.” For Presbyterian (10-36, 6-12 Big South), Cam Mallo collected two hits with one walk while Amman Dewberry and Jonathan Williams each recorded an RBI.

The teams will continue their series with game two scheduled for Saturday at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston.
