The Citadel senior Michael Gibson was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, according to an April 27 announcement by the league office.
This recognition highlights Gibson’s performance for The Citadel Bulldogs men’s baseball team over the past week. It is his first time receiving this honor as a Bulldog and makes him the second player from The Citadel to earn conference honors this season.
Gibson said, “I am thankful that the Lord has given me this opportunity to glorify him in this way. It was a fun week, but it’s always a blessing to be around these guys every day. There’s no other group I would rather compete with or work with. I’m excited to see what we do in the next couple of weeks.”
During four games last week, Gibson posted a .500 batting average, going 7-for-14 at bat with two doubles, one home run, and five runs batted in. He hit a home run against Georgia Southern on April 22 and collected six hits during a weekend series against UNCG. On Friday, April 24 he went 2-for-3 with a double in The Citadel’s 2-1 win; on Saturday he was 3-for-4 with another double in their 10-1 victory.
Gibson also earned his fifth save of the season on Friday against UNCG by pitching over two innings without allowing any runs and striking out five batters—ranking him second for saves within the conference.
Citadel pitching coach James Reeves said, “It was a fun week to watch Mike on both sides of the ball. It’s a pleasure to watch a guy excel at the plate and on the mound in the same game. He has worked extremely hard to prepare his body to consistently be an impact performer on both sides of the ball. Excited for him to receive this well-deserved honor.” Head coach Russell Triplett added, “Gibby had an incredible week. I’m so happy for him. He is the best teammate and deserves to succeed.”
