Charleston is recognized for its significant role in American history through sites such as the Old Slave Mart Museum, which addresses the domestic slave trade according to its official history page. The city’s Council Chamber dates back to 1818 and features original chandeliers and historic portraits as described on its official site. It also retains original Thomas Edison light bulbs from 1896 that functioned until 1983 according to city records.

The City of Charleston states it focuses on preserving and improving residents’ quality of life according to its mission page, working alongside regional government entities toward this goal as outlined on its website. Geographically, Charleston encompasses areas around Charleston Harbor and extends influence within the greater region including North Charleston and Summerville based on information from its official website.

These measures reflect broader efforts by city officials both in facilitating major events like community races as well as maintaining focus on historical preservation and resident well-being.
