Charleston Southern University’s women’s basketball team lost to UNC Asheville 60-48 on Wednesday night at Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The defeat drops Charleston Southern’s record to 7-16 overall and 5-5 in Big South play, while UNC Asheville improves to 9-14 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
Tyonna Bailey led the Buccaneers with 17 points, marking her eleventh game this season as the team’s top scorer. Asha Sra achieved her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mya Dotson contributed five points and set a personal best with four blocked shots.
UNC Asheville took control early, holding Charleston Southern to just three field goals in the first quarter and building a seven-point lead after one period. Nia Green scored six of her team-high 14 points during that stretch for UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs continued their strong defensive effort in the second quarter, limiting Charleston Southern’s shooting percentage and outscoring them by eight points to enter halftime ahead by fifteen.
After halftime, Charleston Southern responded with improved offense, particularly from Bailey and Sra who combined for most of their team’s third-quarter points. Despite narrowing the deficit to twelve entering the fourth quarter, CSU struggled again offensively down the stretch as UNC Asheville secured victory through consistent free throw shooting.
Charleston Southern shot just over twenty-four percent from the field and under twenty-four percent from beyond the arc. They collected thirty-three rebounds but were outrebounded by nineteen by UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs also held advantages in bench scoring and second-chance opportunities.
“Bailey led CSU with 17 points, her 11th game this season leading the team in scoring.”
“Sra posted her second consecutive double-double and third of the season.”
“Dotson recorded a career-high four blocks.”
Charleston Southern will continue its conference schedule at home against Presbyterian on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m.
