Mayor John Tecklenberg is asking the public to financially contribute to a memorial that will honor the nine victims killed in the 2015 mass shooting at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The Emanuel Nine Memorial is intended to serve as a tribute to the individuals lost in the massacre by promoting a world without racism and violence.
“As we end the month long commemoration of the 6th anniversary of the massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church, @firstladycharleston and I - if you are moved, encourage you to please donate a MINIMUM of $9 to help build the Emanuel Nine Memorial,” Tecklenberg wrote in a June 29 Facebook post. “We thank you in advance for your kindness and support in remembering these 9 souls forever.”
A 21-year-old white supremacist killed five clergy and four church members during a Bible study at the Charleston church on June 17, 2015.
In addition the nine individuals who died, the memorial will also honor the nine survivors of shooting, the victims’ families and members of the church.
The memorial will include a marble fountain featuring the names of the deceased and a garden dedicated to the survivors.
Donations can be made on the Emanuel Nine Memorial’s website.
