South Carolina ports are reporting the highest fiscal year on record for containers handled.
Moultrie News reported that for the fiscal year 2021, South Carolina ports moved 2.55 million 20-foot equivalent (TEU) units through the Wando Welch Terminal, the North Charleston Terminal, and the Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal, for a 9.6% increase from last year.
The ports also handled 1.42 million pier containers for fiscal year 2021, a 7.7% increase from last year.
Hugh Weathers, commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture, recently visited the new Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal in North Charleston.
"Thanks to the @SCPorts and Tate Zeigler for a great tour of the new Hugh K Leatherman, Sr. terminal in North Charleston," Weathers wrote in a July 28 Twitter post. "The ports play a huge role for South Carolina agribusiness!"
The two rail-served inland ports also had a record year for fiscal year 2021, with a combined 192,844 rail moves, a 11.7% increase from fiscal year 2020.
Phase 1 of South Carolina Ports’ Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal launched in March, adding approximately 700,000 TEU units of capacity to the Port of Charleston.
Planned construction for the terminal will add up to 2.4 million TEUs of throughput capacity to the port.
