Charleston District 3 City Councilor Jason Sakran was recently chosen to become a Riley Fellow through The Riley Institute's Diversity Leaders Initiative at Furman University, according to an online report by HolyCitySinner.com.
Sakran, a small business owner and the Charleston County School District's expanded learning director, will now become part of a network of more than 2,300 leaders who are dedicated to moving the state's social and economic progress forward.
"Thanks for sharing Christian! It's a real honor to be accepted and I look forward to the work ahead. Thanks to @FurmanNews as well," Sakran tweeted Aug. 27 in response to a Twitter post by HolyCitySinner.com announcing the news.
Sakran joins other Riley Fellows to take part in the 18th year for the award-winning Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI), according to HolyCitySinner.com.
The program provides much needed tools while teaching it's fellows how to spearhead social and economic progress in the state.
The Holy City Sinner reported Sakran is among 42 people who were selected to be a part of the 15th Low Country cohort.
Before he was selected for the DLI class, Sakran was first nominated by a graduate of the program and endured a thorough application and interview process.
Members of Sakran's DLI class will join the distinct network of Riley Fellows upon their graduation in December, according to the Holy City Sinner.
