After a four-year run as director of traffic and transportation in Charleston, Keith Benjamin was sworn-in last month as the associate administrator for Highway Policy and External Affairs under President Joe Biden.
"A new journey begins as I was honored to be sworn into the Biden Administration as Associate Administrator for Highway Policy and External Affairs, @USDOTFHWA. We have a task in building infrastructure for all and I look forward to the challenge. #Grateful #LetsWork," Benjamin tweeted Aug. 31.
In the July 2020 issue of Bicycling magazine, Benjamin wrote that his entry into this world of transportation was through the labor movement that represented the Transport Workers Union of America, and it comprised more than 200,000 school bus, transit, and airline workers across the country.
During his time as the director in Charleston, one of his major achievements was securing $18 million in federal funding that the city received to construct a dedicated bridge over the Ashley River meant for bikes and pedestrians, according to the Charleston City Paper.
Benjamin, it turns out, is no stranger to working for the federal government, as he had initially worked with the U.S. Department of Transportation before coming to the city of Charleston in 2017.
