South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster wrote a letter to the Charleston County School District addressing the use of law enforcement to enforce mask mandates.
The letter was written after a parent was told they could not leave their children at school if they were not wearing a mask, according to Count on 2 News.
“Numerous media outlets have recently documented the methods being employed by the Charleston County School District to enforce the district's mandatory mask mandate," said Gov. McMaster in his letter. "Among other things, I am concerned that the district’s aggressive use of school resource officers may inadvertently create unhealthy, erroneous and negative stereotypes of law enforcement officers, especially among our young children."

Gov. McMaster, a Republican, went on to praise South Carolina's law enforcement officers in the letter.
"South Carolina is blessed to have the finest law enforcement organization in the nation" McMaster said. "Our state's school resource officers are members of these outstanding organizations."
CCSD board members began enforcing the district’s mask mandate for students, staff, and visitors in late September. Enforcement begins with warnings issued Monday and Tuesday and unmasked students unable to attend in-person classes beginning Wednesday.
