The Charleston County environment management crew is taking extra measures to ensure that everything inside the recyclable cart is actually recyclable, according to a county news release.
The added efforts started on Oct. 11. If a curbside recycling cart is contaminated with non-recyclable items, recycling staff will label them with an "Oops" tag to educate the citizens about what they should throw inside the recyclable carts.
"The county recycling program only accepts glass bottles/jars, aluminum/steel cans, plastic bottles/containers, cartons, paperboard/cardboard, and paper," the release said.
Some of the items that should not be recycled include wood, food waste, plastic wrap/plastic bags, large plastic items, cords, cables, belts, hoses, clothing/blankets, Styrofoam and concrete.
It is important that the people learn about the right recycling practices because "non-recyclable contamination damages equipment, poses worker safety issues, and increases the cost of recycling," the release said.
The staff members will go on inspection drives in specific areas according to the published dates that can be found here.
