WEST ASHLEY WANTS A BETTER NORTH BRIDGE

On Saturday, October 2, while over 250 community members joined us for an advocacy bike ride over the North Bridge, families of West Ashley's Westminster Presbyterian Church came out to demonstrate their support too. The common theme: we all benefit when everyone in our community has safe, equitable access. Hear Pastor Daniel Smoak's testimonial about why he believes in a Better North Bridge.

We're so grateful for Westminster's involvement, not only as a member of our Better North Bridge Coalition, but for their dedication to caring for community.

As we keep the pressure on by building up neighborhood testimonials, and mobilizing with grassroots outreach and visible demonstrations of support, we work toward knitting communities and giving everyone a voice in the process. The result of these efforts will strengthen Charleston County's federal RAISE grant application, to be submitted July 2022. As you may know, the previous iteration of this grant (formerly called BUILD) was awarded to the City of Charleston in 2019 to construct the bike/ped bridge between downtown Charleston and West Ashley, which is currently working through permitting. RAISE emphasizes projects with a strong focus on equity, which makes the Better North Bridge a perfect fit. We cannot afford to miss this funding opportunity next year, and YOU CAN HELP ensure a strong application. Here's how:

  1. Volunteer to collect community profiles from your West Ashley or North Charleston neighbors — email Savannah@CharlestonMoves.org for details.
  2. If you live within two miles of the North Bridge crossing, order a (free) yard sign! We're taking requests through October, and we will coordinate to get signs to those who order by mid-November.
  3. If you are an elected official or represent a business, organization and/or agency, please join our Better North Bridge Coalition.

YOUR IMPACT

When our public spaces are designed for the safety and benefit of all users, we, as a community, are provided opportunity. It helps to level the playing field, so regardless of age, background, ability, income or level of education, everyone has a chance to meet their needs.

Your donation helps us achieve this vision by transforming our streets and bridges into places that work for all. Each victory is a stepping stone. From getting construction on a new bike and pedestrian bridge underway, to filling a sidewalk that connects a neighborhood to a transit stop, every bit matters. And this advocacy is fueled by your donation.

$20 from you, your friends and family make a big difference. Please visit our Legwork for Livability campaign page to see what your contribution will help us advocate for, and click the button below to give. We've reached 60% of our goal — please help get us over the finish line

Thank you for your support,

 Katie Zimmerman, Executive Director

Savannah Brennan, Director of ProgrammingP.S. — We're excited to announce that SCDOT is acting on the favorable results of the Azalea Drive Road Diet study, and positive feedback from the community, by incorporating bike lanes into their resurfacing along the first segment of Azalea between Cosgrove and Bonds Avenues! THANK YOU to each of you for speaking up in support of this safety improvement, and to Charleston County and SCDOT for their leadership. This is a critical connection to the future Better North Bridge, regardless of where it touches down, and accomplishing this in advance of the grant application makes our funding request even stronger. The work has already started — we'll let you know once it's complete!

P.P.S. — More good news for North Charleston! Check out this week's Post & Courier article on the City's upcoming efforts to fill sidewalks, with a focus on safe pathways to schools.
