Mount Pleasant issued the following announcement on December 21.
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (December 21, 2021) – The Mount Pleasant Youth Council, comprised of 12 high school students seeking to serve their community, has taken the lead on spreading holiday cheer. The students crafted, glittered, and bedazzled more than 300 homemade holiday cards for East Cooper Meals on Wheels (ECMOW) homebound recipients.
When asked to provide guidance on volunteer activities that the Youth Council could take on, ECMOW Volunteer Manager Kelley Chapman replied, “Our beneficiaries love to receive cards for any day, or for the holidays. Thank you to the Youth Council for exceeding the number of cards needed for our 225 homebound recipients and spreading holiday cheer throughout our community.”
The Youth Council is comprised of Chair Isabelle Turner, Vice Chair Adam El Hassan, Graci Canon, Cally DeMoura, Garrett Griffin, Grace Griffin, Willa Jones, Geneva Kowbeidu, McClain Stoklosa, Caroline Tiller, Chad Weis and McKenna Young. Students attend Wando High School, Lucky Beckham High School, Academic Magnet High School, Bishop England High School, Porter-Gaud School and Oceanside Collegiate Academy.
Isabelle Turner, a Wando High School senior hoping to study at the University of Georgia following graduation, spoke highly of the holiday card project. “As a teenager, I can vouch for the sense of loneliness we experienced during the pandemic and the empathy we felt for the isolation that homebound people may feel,” she said. “We pitched the idea of writing cards to our respective schools and collected more than 300 cards. The Youth Council prepared us well for the positive impact we hope to make as engaged members of our community.”
The ambitious high school students continue to search for community needs to tackle. They have dedicated their 2021-2022 session to raising $150,000 to construct two outdoor basketball courts included in the master plan for the Carolina Park Recreation Complex that currently lack the necessary funds to implement.
Mount Pleasant Community and Government Chief Lauren Sims commended the Youth Council on their drive to excel. “This Council is energized and impacting the community in significant ways.
